Ethiopia Sheka Forest Reserve – Direct Trade Specialty Coffee from a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Discover coffee from the birthplace of Arabica

This Ethiopia Sheka Forest Reserve is an exceptional Direct Trade specialty coffee grown in one of the world's last remaining wild coffee forests. Originating from the UNESCO-protected Sheka Forest Reserve in southwestern Ethiopia, this region is widely regarded as the birthplace of Arabica coffee.

Thousands of indigenous heirloom coffee varieties grow naturally beneath the forest canopy, where fertile soils, abundant rainfall and a cool mountain climate create ideal conditions for producing coffees with remarkable elegance and complexity.

Produced by smallholder farmers committed to sustainable forest farming, every purchase supports biodiversity conservation while ensuring farmers receive a fair income through Direct Trade.

Flavour Profile

This washed Ethiopian coffee is beautifully clean, elegant and floral.

Tasting Notes

  • Peach
  • Bergamot
  • Vanilla
  • Black Tea

Bright citrus-like bergamot is balanced by juicy peach, smooth vanilla sweetness and a refined black tea finish, creating a delicate yet complex cup with exceptional clarity.

Origin

Located approximately 370 kilometres southeast of Jimma, the Sheka Forest Reserve is one of Ethiopia's richest ecological regions. Dense rainforest, bamboo forests, wetlands and traditional farming landscapes make this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve one of the most biodiverse coffee-growing regions in Africa.

Due to the remote terrain, freshly harvested coffee cherries are often transported by donkey or mule before processing. The area's heavy rainfall and rich forest soils contribute to the coffee's distinctive floral aromas and vibrant fruit character.

Processing

Only perfectly ripe cherries are hand-selected.

After harvesting, the coffee undergoes the traditional washed process. The cherries are depulped, naturally fermented for 12–48 hours, thoroughly washed and carefully dried.

This method highlights the coffee's bright acidity, clean sweetness and elegant floral complexity.

Sustainability & Direct Trade

Choosing this coffee supports much more than exceptional flavour.

Direct Trade helps:

  • provide farmers with fair prices
  • preserve Ethiopia's ancient coffee forests
  • protect the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
  • reduce deforestation
  • promote sustainable forest agriculture
  • safeguard biodiversity for future generations

Every cup contributes directly to both environmental conservation and local livelihoods.

Perfect Brewing Methods

Its medium-light roast makes this coffee ideal for:

  • Filter Coffee
  • V60
  • Chemex
  • Kalita Wave
  • AeroPress
  • Moccamaster

It also produces an elegant, fruity espresso with remarkable sweetness.
